So let’s start!

1. Crop the Model

The first thing to do is to select the ‘Quick Selection Tool’ so we could trace the model, but with this image that I am using, I didn’t trace the model but instead I trace the plain background because it’s easier to select. After completing the selection just right click and then choose ‘select Inverse’. As you can see, you have selected the model now so the next thing you gotta do is add a layer mask by clicking the ‘Add Layer Mask’ button located below the layer tab.

3. Make a Background for your Model and Effects

Press CTRL + N to create a new page for your background so you can put the model and effects on it later. Name it Dispersion and then type 1920 for the width and 1080 for the Height – it should be in pixels and change the resolution to 300. Also, change the background contents to Transparent and then press ok.

4. Fill your Background with Gradient

Now, click the ‘Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer’ located below the layer’s tab and then select ‘Gradient’, now you can see a Gradient Fill box opened and then click on the rectangular gradient box and select the black and white fill then double click on the left ‘Color Stop and change its color from black to gray, you can type #363636 to achieve the same gray I am using and on the right ‘Color stop’ change the white color to light gray or #bcbbbd, then press ok and now you’re back to Gradient Fill box don’t press ok yet because we have to change a few things here. For the ‘Gradient Fill’ box, click the drop-down for ‘Style’ and select ‘Radial’. Next thing to do is change the angle to 0 and check the ‘Reverse’ box.

5. Move the Model to the Gradient Background

Then press ‘CTRL + T’ and hold ‘Shift’ on your keyboard while you decrease the size to maintain the proportion. Make sure to fit it properly and then move it a little bit on the left side so you’ll have a space for dispersion effects later.

Before anything else, make sure you are selecting the Dispersion layer mask and your foreground color is set to Black then open the Brush window by pressing F5 on your keyboard or press ‘Window’ located at the upper part then select ‘Brush and you can adjust the angle of the brush so you can make a random stroke while you brush on our subject and try to soften the edges of the right side of the model to achieve the dispersion look.
